THE LORD KINGSALE: The Lord Kingsale, spelt as in the old medieval English way and as the medieval town was known Kingsale, is one of the oldest establishments in Kinsale. Serving ale in the town for some two hundred and fifty years The Lord Kingsale was leased from the gentry in 1778, the documented figure on the lease was the staggering sum of one old penny per annum.
The name De Courcy is synonymous with ancient,
medieval Kinsale (Kingsale), its noble heritage
and its chequered legacy of influential warriors
and rulers. John De Courcy one of the foremost
Norman settlers was nominated the 'Premier Irish
Baron' after he heroically defeated the champion
of the King of France around the year 1205 AD.
His son, and heir, Myles de Courcy became the
first 'Baron of Kingsale' (old English
interpretation) in 1223 AD.
One of the most famous seats of the De Courcy
dynasty was located at the Old Head of Kinsale (Dun
Mhic Phadraig) and today the ruin of De Courcy
Castle stands as a monumental reminder of their
association with Ireland and Kinsale.
More
recently in 1986 John De Courcy the 35th Baron of
Kingsale officially donated the 12th century ruin
to the towns people of Kinsale, who no doubt will
preserve this historic and legendary landmark.
The Mortimers first purchased the licensed premises at No. 4 Main Street in 1984 and with undivided professionalism, commitment, endeavour and accumulated expertise have succeeded in establishing the Lord Kingsale as a premier house of distinction in Ireland with an infamous reputation throughout the world.
Throughout the year the evening programme varies from traditional Irish songs, music and poetry.
The overall welcoming, friendly and homely atmosphere that The Lord Kingsale possesses in plenitude is due to the fact that the Mortimers treat the premises as an extension of their own home: and their customers as an extension of their ever increasing circle of friends. |
